Dyneema is the headlining feature here: This burly fabric is known for its incredible strength-to-weight ratio and tear resistance, in addition to being fully waterproof. As a result, the sub-2-pound Southwest 55 is one of the lightest packs here but also ridiculously hardwearing, which is rare among ultralight packs. Importantly, with removable aluminum stays, a foam backpanel, and wide and supportive hipbelt, it’s also capable of carrying loads up to 40 pounds (many packs below are rated only to 30 to 35 lb.). Hyperlite’s Southwest is our top pick for dedicated thru-hikers who log a lot of miles, but it’s overkill for recreational backpackers. REI Co-op Flash 55 ($199) Weight: 2 lbs. 13.0 oz.Fabric: Nylon (100D & 210D)Capacity: 55LWhat we like: Great value; highly customizable features and fit.What we don’t: Thin nylon pack body lacks durability; ventilation is middling. REI Co-op’s in-house gear is well known for value, and their Flash 55 pack is no exception. Designed to meet the growing interest in ultralight backpacking, the 2-pound 13-ounce, $199 Flash is a well-rounded choice for those in the market for an entry-level option. REI claims the Flash can handle loads up to 30 pounds, and carrying comfort is excellent with an internal steel frame, padded mesh backpanel and hipbelt, and adjustable torso length (new in the recently updated model). Most of all, we love the Flash’s adaptability: The lid, hipbelt, compression straps, and hipbelt and shoulder pockets are all removable, meaning you can modify and adjust the pack to suit your hiking style and organizational needs (removing all of these components shaves 7 oz. from the weight of the pack). Given its high level of customization, the Flash 55 might carry more appeal in the UL market than the more traditional Osprey below, especially for those particular about storage. And chances are it’ll fit: Along with the adjustable torso, the pack comes in four sizes—small, medium, large, and a large torso/small hipbelt combo. That said, there are a number of compromises that come along with the budget price point: Materials are thin with just 100-denier nylon in the body and 210-denier nylon on the bottom, and the padded backpanel doesn’t offer the ventilation of suspended mesh designs. And with a weight approaching 3 pounds, the Flash 55 certainly won’t appeal to militant ounce-counters. Umpqua Rock Creek Chest Pack Review
OrganizationThe main compartment on the Rock Creek holds two long (9”) fly boxes, and two interior pouches (one zippered, one open) hold a few leaders, weight, and strike indicators. There’s a cord for tippet at the bottom of the pack but it is hidden from view by the rest of the pack. Testers preferred to stash tippet reels in the two open pouches at the top where they are handy and visible (but not totally secure). We also found the hemostat storage to be a bit cumbersome (they’re intended to slide under the fly patch). That prevented the line from getting tangled on the handle, but also made the hemostat tricky to extricate while also holding a netted fish. Stretchy mesh pouches on the sides keep flotant and bug spray handy, and a D-ring on the yoke holds a landing net at the upper back. ComfortThe wide, meshy yoke makes this pack more comfortable than any other chest pack we’ve tested. It doesn’t chafe the neck or shoulders, nor does it shift about when casting or landing a fish. Thick foam padding keeps items stored in the main compartment from poking into the chest. AdjustabilityThe waist straps might not be long enough for XXXL wearers, but everyone from kids to tall guys can achieve an optimal fit with this pack. VentilationThe Rock Creek feels cool and breezy in hot weather. The meshy yoke does a good job of keeping clamminess in check. Water-resistanceThe pack rides high enough that most wading situations won’t soak gear. Although the nylon repels a light drizzle, it’s not waterproof. A waterproof case or bag is recommended to protect electronics. If the pack ends up being submerged, it takes a good 24-36 hours to dry, due to the thick backpanel and rugged fabric. ComfortThe Penta was one of the most comfortable helmets tested and became a big hit with testers. The lightweight and lack of a plastic suspension system allow the Penta to fit comfortably without hard things jabbing into your skull. Simple but plush padding offers comfort on the brow and on the top of the head and is a little thicker than most helmets tested. The strap suspension system was popular with testers, particularly women with long hair who appreciated the way it allowed room for a ponytail to stick out the back and was flexible and soft unlike plastic suspension systems. A light, simple chinstrap lacks padding but didn’t cut into the skin and helped provide a comfortable fit. VentilationThe Penta features eleven spacious vents, spread throughout the sides and rear of the helmet. The breathability of the Penta was popular with users as the large vents allowed ample airflow and some generous spacing between the helmet and the head allowed users to feel comfortable while climbing and hiking. Ease of AdjustmentAdjusting the Penta is fairly simple with two cinching straps on the back to compliment the chinstrap. Lightweight, slim buckles on the rear of the suspension system allow for effective tightening and loosening of the helmet to find the proper fit. While effective, it can take some practice to adjust the buckles and in particular, to find the straps when you’re trying to pull them tight to fit. It was close to impossible to find these straps with bulky gloves on while ice climbing. FeaturesFour large headlamp attachment points do a really effective job of holding headlamp straps in place. Built in next to the vents, they sit flush with the shell of the helmet, creating a sleek profile that keeps the clips from snagging on slings or clothing. The clips are easy to use and access, even with gloves on and were very popular with testers. VersatilityTesters found this to be a helmet that performed well in sport, trad and ice climbing. For sport climbing, the Penta’s lightweight and comfortable fit along with sleek styling and choice of four colors made it popular with testers. Trad climbers will appreciate the ample ventilation for long routes and when scrambling on approaches and descents. While the Penta may not be the warmest helmet on the market for long, cold days on the ice, it did fit well over hats and other headwear. The Penta is a unisex helmet but was the most popular helmet tested with ladies because of the way the soft webbing suspension system allowed for the spacious and comfortable fit over a ponytail. In terms of durability, the Penta’s hard polycarbonate shell held up admirably and kept the shell clean of dings and marks throughout the rigors of use. Additionally, the polystyrene foam is thicker and proved to be more robust than some of the thinner and lighter helmets tested. WeightAt 205 grams (7.23 oz), the Penta was one of the lightest helmets tested and is comparable in weight to the Black Diamond Vapor. THE VERDICT The Singing Rock Penta is a comfortable, lightweight molded foam helmet with good ventilation, making it a well-rounded and versatile helmet for rock and ice climbers. The soft, nylon chinstrap and suspension system makes this unisex helmet attractive for both male and female climbers as it allows long hair to fit comfortably in the rear. Low profile headlamp attachment clips are effective and stay out of the way of slings and clothing while keeping your light in place.

Lowa Renegade GTX Lo Review
Stability For such a low profile shoe, the Renegade has deceivingly solid stability. It comes standard with a Vibram outsole that grips rock well when scrambling. The specific type of Vibram outsole is referred to as Renovo, which is a grip-oriented rubber tread, making the Renegade more specialized in scrambling on rock. An added benefit of the Renovo ingredient is Lowa’s patented Monowrap technology, a plastic wrap that adds to the stability. It also creates a little protection around the heel area of the shoe. To add to the stability, the lacing has an extra open hook at the end to secure the shoe more firmly to your foot, allowing for more ankle support. Protection The DuraPU Monowrap frame gives this shoe protection around the heel area. There is a toe guard, but it’s not reinforced with rubber, nor does it offer any additional protection that would be considered a benefit. Light hikers aren’t really known for their protection, but this one scored just average in its class. Comfort The insoles were, by far, the worst in its class. This was disconcerting given the price point. Replacing the insoles is paramount. They advertise the footbeds as “Climate Control” insoles, but the function of these are confusing given how little breathability the shoe offered overall. The Renegades do come in a wide version and when forced, leather can stretch some to conform to the user’s foot. The break-in period lasted about 15 miles for the Renegade to be comfortable. While they did produce a few mild hot spots during and after the break-in period, blisters never formed. Construction It’s obvious when you pull the Renegades out of the box, these are well constructed shoes. The Nubuck leather, one of the highest quality leathers available, is a relatively low maintenance material that doesn’t require upkeep such as conditioning the shoe as you would in a more traditional leather that cracks and dries out. After numerous miles of off-trail hiking around the rugged terrain of Rocky Mountain National Park, the stitching had not frayed or ripped in any capacity, where other shoes had started to breakdown. Performance Once these shoes are broken in, the Renegades perform better than any other shoes we tested on day trips, scrambling on class 3 or 4 terrain, crossing shallow streams and muddy trails. Despite the lack of comfort and protection, the Renegade is probably one of the higher performing shoes thanks to its designed use on rock scrambles and its long lasting construction. The Verdict The Lowa Renegade is a European-designed hiking shoe with quality construction and provides excellent performance. Despite a moderate break-in period, this waterproof hiking shoe works for long daytrips and can last a long time due to its durable high quality leather.
